Pakistan selected all rounder Mohammad Hafeez as its new T20 captain for next month’s series against Sri Lanka, leaving Misbah-ul-Haq in charge of the Test and one-day teams. Pakistan’s selectors also selected three different wicketkeepers for the three formats and dropped Misbah from the Twenty20 team. Pakistan will play two T20s, five ODIs and three Tests against Sri Lanka, first with a T20 at Hambantota on June 1.

The selectors also recalled fast bowler Mohammad Sami to all three squads and middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal was back into the test team. Wicketkeeper Shakeel Ansar impressed selectors in the domestic T20 event, while Sarfraz Ahmed and Adnan Akmal will stay in the ODIs and Test matches respectively. Misbah didn’t announce he was quit T20 cricket, and the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board said Hafeez’s rise is only for the tour of Sri Lanka.

Pakistan will play three T20 games against Australia before challenging in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September. “The whole world is experimenting with different teams for different formats of the game, and that’s what we are doing now,” Ashraf said. “You need players of different temperaments for all the three formats.” Hafeez said he learnt a lot while playing under different captains, like Rashid Latif, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik.

It will be a hard test for the Commonwealth champion, with Hirales caption to the UK with a 16-0 record with eight triumphs and a draw. Should he overcome Raul, Frampton has a winter date with top European Kiko Martinez in Belfast lined up.

You cannot get tougher than an endearing Raul Hirales prospect, it’s a great confront and one Carl needs and is excited about, said Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan.Hirales has crushed three forecasts before now and has eight KOs on his documentation so we are up against it but it’s a great occasion for Carl on a huge global platform.

We want to meet Kiko Martinez in Belfast in September and we are touching on from Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe now as we are angry that they are antagonism each other and not Carl.Frampton’s advertiser Eddie Hearn added:We required a big stride up in class and we have got it.

Hirales is a tough, winning and exceedingly rated Mexican and we hope he can supply a stern test for Carl. Victory here will set up a Kiko Martinez fight for September and from there we want to be in a location to face up to current IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula for the title.

Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilly has been ruled out of Friday`s match against RCB due to a restrain injury. Gilly pulled a constrain while running a single and was retired hurt during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders last night here, which the Punjab group lost by eight wickets.

We will wait for additional detailed results,Gilly said, adding he would keep everyone updated on his injury status. There is nothing to hide. I won`t be playing tomorrow. In Gilly absence, David Hussey will lead the side.

Stating that while any sort of wound to any player can be irritating and unacceptable, Gilly said it throws up occasion for someone else. Gilly said that Marsh was the best batsman in this format with plenty of talent and should lend strength to the team`s batting, which is struggling.

Their bowling, too, has not looked lethal and tomorrow they will be up against the likes of Chris Gayle, Kohli, AB de Villiers and Tiwary of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gilly blamed the batsmen for the team`s failure in the tournament so far. KXIP has managed to win just two out of the five matches.

Gilly, however, refused to hold the Indian cricketers, predominantly the domestic players, responsible for Punjab`s dismal show. They are certainly a talented bunch, said Gilly, citing examples of Mandeep Singh, Dogra and Chawla.

Gilly insisted that the team is learning from the mistake.I am sure we are learning from our frustrations and mistakes earlier made and that’s all part of the journey of cricket,he said.

On facing Daniel Vettori’s men tomorrow, he said that in T20 any side can beat anyone. The swashbuckler Gayle`s tempting form must be a cause of enormous worry for Punjab but Gilly said that the West Indian would have to start from zero on Friday.Every game is a fresh start. They are a strong, all-round team. They are a convinced team and our challenge is to do what we are doing well,he said.

Steve Backley believes Jessica Ennis dreams of winning London 2012 gold are out of her hands, although backing the former world champion to overcome her javelin frailties this summer. Jessica, the top poster girl of this summer’s Games, has surrender two world titles in less than a year, losing to heptathlete Tatyana Chernova at last year’s World Championships.

Jessica has insist she will not press the panic button and has a chance to avenge her two rivals at next month’s IAAF Hypo-Meeting heptathlon in Gotzis, where she bids for a hat-trick of consecutive titles, with Chernova 251 points adrift last year. However, with the former world youth and less important winner and Olympic bronze medalist Chernova, 24, seemingly past her troubles of stringing together two solid days and supremacy Olympic champion Dobrynska apparently back to her best; the complexity of topping the London 2012 podium has become clearer than ever.

Ennis confront is not going to be Jess. Whether Jess can take gold or not is out of her hands I believe, said Backley. She is a hard to consider athlete, she delivers under pressure, she knows how to fight, and we saw in Daegu that she puts up a mean fight when things are not going her way.But the difficulty for her is that you have got a young star like Tatyana Chernova and the knowledgeable Nataliya Dobrynska, who we saw in the indoors is always good in Olympic year.

Jessica, 26, defeated Chernova on a head-to-head basis at the 2011 World contest winning five out of seven events but her best javelin throw of 39.95 meters was exactly 13 meters shy of Chernova, costing her 251 points. It ultimately accounted for her loss with a final 149 point shortage with the Russian able to cross the line third and behind winner Ennis in the final 800m event to secure victory.

Yet former javelin world record holder Backley believes it was a vital knowledge for Ennis to go through, and one that could guide her back to golden glory in four months time after some significant fine-tuning.With javelin, you need both the usual talent and the enthusiasm to work hard on it, he added.

Jess has got both, but it is not her most satisfied event and she does it very much by being taught; it is not a flair. So it is a tackle and it needs a bit of work. But I have no doubt that is what she has been doing this winter within the hands of her trainer Mick Hill. He will be teaching and coaching her, and positively it stands up under pressure.

Mexico’s Morales protect his World Boxing Council light-welterweight title on Saturday against victorious American contestant Danny Garcia in Houston, Texas. Morales, 35, is the first Mexican combatant to win world titles in four weight partition super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight and light welterweight while Garcia is in his first world title bout at age 24.

He’s a great fighter. He has made his mark in the sport,Garcia said.He is a wiliness veteran, smart, knows how to fight, how to win. He has had his time to shine. Come Saturday night, there will be a new winner.Morales, 52-7 with 36 knockouts, is 4-1 since ending a three-year layoff in 2010 and anxious to prove he has the form to face tougher foes, potentially England’s Amir Khan, winning American Tim Bradley or elite welterweights.

Boxing is not just about potency and a few words,Morales said.To beat a young man, to beat his speed, his dream, his hunger, will show I’m still at the top level. My incentive is for bigger and better fights beyond this fight. The word ‘loss’ does not cross my mind.

Morales lost an interim world title fight to Argentina’s Marcos Maidana by mainstream decision last April, but bounced back last September with a 10th-round stoppage of previously unbeaten countryman Pablo Cesar Cano to claim the vacant WBC crown.I’m very eager,Morales said.I’m very well trained and well prepared to fight this young man who is very hungry and dreams to rip my title away and send me into retirement.

The fight was delayed from January so Morales could undergo gallbladder surgery, but the veteran was strong-minded to face Garcia, testing himself against a rising star to satisfy his own questions about his status. There are some doubts in my mind,Morales said. There are some kinds of fights I want to fight but I don’t know if I am 100 percent equipped for those fights. These types of fights will let me know if I am ready.

Garcia, 22-0 with 14 knockouts, is coming off a split-decision victory over neighbor Kendall Holt last November at Los Angeles. It has been a long road going on the undercards to the main event and I’m ready to be a winner now. I knew I had a lot of hard work to do and I put that work in,Garcia said.

Kenya’s Michael Kipyego tear up the script to win the Tokyo Marathon with earlier world record holder Haile Gebrselassie left splash in fourth. The former 3000m steeplechase expert Kipyego clocked a winning time of two hours, seven minutes and 37 seconds in cold conditions for his first marathon victory. Gebrselassie broke away from last year’s winner Hailu Mekonnen before the 36-kilometre mark but Kipyego powered past the vanishing Ethiopian with around four kilometres to go.

The result leaves Gebrselassie’s Olympic hopes in doubt after three Ethiopians ran below two hours and five minutes in the Dubai Marathon last month. Gebrselassie completed in a disappointing time of 2:08:17 after targeting a sub-2:05 run to boost his chances of protected a spot on the Ethiopia team for this year’s London Games. The 38-year-old twice Olympic and four-times 10,000 metres gold medallist, however, vowed to fight on.

“I could run another marathon in two weeks,” a defiant Gebrselassie said. “I felt fantastic for the first 30 kilometers but then I had some problems at the end of the race.”The last 5km was the worst I’ve ever run,” added the Ethiopian, who lost his world record to Kenyan Patrick Makau (2:03:38) five months ago in Berlin. Gebrselassie’s previous record stood at 2:03:59. He has had his struggles in current marathons, failing to finish the 2010 New York City Marathon and pulling out of Tokyo last year after injuring himself in training.

Japan’s Arata Fujiwara boosted his chances of making his country’s Olympic squad by finishing runner-up in 2:07:48 after passing Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich in the final stretch. Kipyego could barely believe he had stolen the thunder of the man dubbed the “Emperor”.

Jessica Ennis was happy with her performance on day one of the UK Trials and Championships as she builds up to the defence of her world indoor pentathlon title next month. The 26-year-old started the day with well-deserved success in the high jump. She then threw 14.09m in the shot put, which placed her sixth, but still exceeded her target for the event. “When you have someone there in a real clash, it makes you raise your game. It was a good competition”

“I’m really happy. It was my first high jump competition of the indoor season and it felt comfortable,” Ennis said. Competing on well-known territory at the two-day event held at the English Institute of Sport, where she trains in her home city of Sheffield, the previous outdoor world heptathlon champion cleared her initial three heights at the first attempt, but needed two attempts to clear both 1.85m and 1.87m.

She took three attempts to clear 1.89m and found herself trailing Emma Perkins, who set a new individual best when she cleared the same height first time. But Ennis then dug deep to clear 1.91m at the first attempt to seal success and equal her best jump of 2011. Ennis added: “It’s nice to start off jumping in the 90s because that’s what I need to do in the pentathlon or heptathlon, so it’s promising for the rest of the year.”

She also paid honor to Perkins’s performance, adding: “You always want to jump as high as you can for yourself, but when you have someone there in a real battle it makes you raise your game. “It was a good contest because it puts you under pressure when you have to clear heights at the third attempt. “You worry a bit, because you don’t want to go out at that height and I really wanted to jump in the 1.90s, but you have to get yourself together and re-focus.” Her 14.09m in the shot put was some way down on Ennis’s personal best of 14.67m, but she was happy after setting herself the target of throwing more than 14m.

The first match of the 2012 McCain Indoor City Challenge saw victory for the Sheffield Flames, with blistering performances different sharply with the snowy conditions hitting the UK. The match got happening with the women’s long jump at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport today with a strong showing in the women’s long jump, where Katarina Johnson-Thompson opened Manchester Warrior’s Combined Events campaign with a new UK Junior Indoor Record of 6.39m. The rising heptathlete then went on to smash her shot put PB of 11.09m with a throw of 11.56 and later secured the combined events face victory with a second place finish in the 60mh.

“I wasn’t really expecting that in the long jump, normally I’m the first one out, but I just connected with the board and got big jumps today so I’m really happy with that,” she said.

“The PB in the shot put has been a long time coming really, I have worked on it more than any other event in the last three years, so I’m glad I got the PB in that too and hopefully I can carry it on to the outdoors. “It’s a great event to battle in, all the joint event athletes know each other and they are really nice girls. I can see why people get into it with the team names like ‘warriors’ and ‘dragons’.

But it was Sheffield Flames who took the first match victory with help from local-girl Jess Ennis who made her best season opener winning the 60mh finishing in 8.05 and producing 6.19m in the long jump to conclude in second place behind Abigail Irozuru who jumped 6.30m.

She said: “It is very local to me and easy to come along, obviously I train here all the time, so it’s a great opportunity to come and blow off the cobwebs at the beginning of the indoor season and just start quite locally.”

Meanwhile Isobel Pooley led the women’s high jump for London South Sharks and finished with a new PB of 1.88m and went on to attempt 1.92m – an Olympic B standard. “I am over the moon. It wasn’t a huge surprise to be truthful as training has been going so well and I’ve just gone to a new place with my run up and technique and I just felt so much more powerful now I am preparation with my new coach Fuzz Ahmed. He has worked miracles really and I knew if I got it right I could jump some big height today,” she said.

Nathan Douglas may not be the British name preying on world champion Christian Taylor’s mind during his winter training; the 29-year-old has his eyes decisively on the London 2012 podium.

While former world champion and Olympic silver medallist Philips Idowu has become a family name, little is known of Douglas, who in 2007, after the European Indoor Championships, was temporarily ranked second in the world.

After a series of injury-plagued seasons, 2011 was shaping up to be his best yet, until a freak injury on the last day of his pre-season training camp ruled him out of the World Championships and left the UK number two once again watching Idowu nab the limelight.

“When my freak accident occurred I had just started to get myself back into really good shape after a few years of injury problems,” said Douglas.I was hopeful of getting back to the form that I was used to, so for this to be taken away from me with a freak accident was hard to take, but you just have to pull yourself up and get on with it.

“Rehab is always a mixed bag as it is always full of ups and downs, but normally it has been going well. I have to be smart and listen to my ankle and let it dictate how hard I can push and guide the speed of recovery.”

However, Douglas claims his injury misfortunes have only made him hungrier for success this season.“I think my experiences have taught me a lot, and you tend to learn more through negative experiences,” he added. “At the moment my aim is to get this ankle totally right and give myself enough time to get into shape and qualify for 2012.

It’s a bit of a dominoes effect where one goal leads to the next, but ultimately the aim would be to make the Olympic final, then once in the final to fight for an Olympic medal.”Recent years have seen the number of world class triple jumper’s rise radically.

Frenchman Teddy Tamgho took gold and a new indoor world record in his home town at last year’s European Indoor Championships while months later it was USA’s Christian Taylor who stole Idowu’s crown at the World Championships in Daegu.
