Andrew Strauss, the former England captain, said on Friday (May 17) that it was important for the side’s Ashes prospects that star batsman Kevin Pietersen recover full fitness. KP is presently sidelined with a knee difficulty and in his absence England struggled to 232 all out in the first innings of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Strauss retired from all cricket following a 2-0 series beat by South Africa last year after KP was dropped from the team for sending text messages serious of his captain to South African players. But Strauss, who succeeded KP as England captain, always insisted the texts had not hastened his retirement. And, on Friday, in a conference with Sky Sports at Lord’s, the former opening batsman said KP was the best player he’d played with.

The vast popular of the time he’s very easy to manage because he works really hard, he’s very professional in the way he goes about his business,Strauss said. And we all know what he brings. As far as I’m worried he’s the best player I’ve ever played with, in terms of sheer talent, in terms of the ability to take the game away from the resistance – he’s outstanding, added Strauss, set to join five other ex-England captains in the Sky comments box for the Ashes. But you know what you’re getting with someone like KP, obviously.

He has got a big ego, and he likes to be the centre of concentration and that’s always going to rub some people up the wrong way. But that is one of challenges of captaincy – bringing a dissimilar group of people together and making sure they all have a common purpose.

Strauss added: I think we’ve seen in this Test how much he (KP) can change the pace – I think we’re absent him in this game. It’s important for England he’s fit.Three-times an Ashes-winner, Strauss led England to a 3-1 series victory the last time cricket’s oldest rivals met in Australia in 2010-11.

In July, England will begin their bid for a third Ashes achievement in a row – something they last managed back in the 1950s. However, Strauss said an England team now captained by his former opening partner, Alastair Cook, would have their work cut out against Australia’s fast bowlers.

Graeme Swann will be licking his lips at the option of playing these guys on turning wickets. It’s going to be closely contested series – Ashes always are and this one will be no dissimilar.

Advertiser Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing applaud Virgin Islands slugger John Dah Rock Jackson (16-1, 14 KOs) for his striking nationwide televised win over previously unbeatable Sir Cerresso Fort.

Fighting in the eight-round co-main event last Friday (April 19) at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City, and live universal on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Jackson was stronger and faster than the well-regarded Fort and won by recognized choice (77-75, 79-73 and 79-73).

WBC 15th rank Jackson was predictable to face a test against Fort (then 16-0-1, 11 KOs) but was simply a league above his game adversary. Jackson took Fort’s power with ease while carry world-class power shots in stunning combination. It was an imposing win for the 24-year-old son of former world winner Julian Jackson.

John was amazing, said Lewkowicz. He showed he is a class above even well-regarded prospects. Fort is a strong fighter and John was just too good for him. Even though he is a KO puncher, he took his time and picked Fort apart. That was a specialist move and it showed his true opposition character.

Lewkowicz says Jackson will be back soon in an even higher profile matchup. The next fight will hopefully be an ESPN main event against an excellence opponent that will showcase to the world that he is a future winner. And after that, I will be looking to the best cable channels like HBO to put him in a world-title fight. I consider it’s going to be a big year for John Jackson.

In an attractive progress, almost 15 abroad cricketers belonging to different Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have apply for Indian citizenship. This reporter spoke to a few sources to try and appreciate the justification behind the sudden spurt of interest in Indian citizenship.

A source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) head office told: So far we have conventional request from Glenn Maxwell, Shakib-al-Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Ryan ten Doeschate, Steve Smith and few more. Almost all of them have same motive for relocation. They want to get a possibility in the playing 11 of their individual franchisees and not just warm the bench.

Maxwell told this reporter, With Laisth Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson in team, other international players in Mumbai Indians don’t stand much of a chance to be in the playing 11. A few of us who find perennially in the bench have given a written demand to the BCCI asking for the foreign symbol to go up by one more to five. If they don’t agree, I am going to file for Indian citizenship.

Ryan ten Doeschate was also of the same opinion. He said,If I have to watch the match, I can do it from my home also. Why come all the way to India? Shakib-Al-Hasan’s case is a little hard. He explored the option of illegally migrating to India, get an Aadhar card and become Indian resident legally. But it’s not that easy. Aadhar cards can take anywhere from two months to three year and many times they don’t arrive at all.

He blames his parents for not journey to India in 1971. Because of that he missed living The Great India Dream every Bangladeshi dreams about. Shoaib Malik is enthused by fellow Pakistani, Azhar Mahmood the cricketer, not the terrorist with whom he shares his name and surname — who is playing as English citizen.

Just like Indian women married to American men can file for US citizenship, I have also practical for Indian citizenship since my current wife and ex-wife both are from Hyderabad, reasoned Shoaib. At a time when other cricketers are looking for Indian citizenship, Virender Sehwag and Unmukt Chand have shamefully applied for British citizenship.

BRITISH Athletics expects to know by the end of this month whether they have lost one of their brightest prospects, Lawrence Okoye, to America and the NFL. Okoye, 21, is a latent discus Olympic champion and was regarded by former British head Coach Charles van Commenee as an outstanding outlook.

But Okoye is presently in America and will have a second NFL trial in Dallas next weekend. Okoye told Peter Eriksson, the new British head coach, of his plans before exit the country and going through his first trial in Atlanta, Georgia. The end of April, when the draft system starts, is D-Day for Okoye who was an inadequate 12th in the Olympics but is a medal chance for Britain at the World Championships this summer.

A British Athletics broadcaster said: Lawrence Okoye has communicated openly with Peter Eriksson and is providing regular updates as to his plans in relation to his 2013 athletics programme. As a member of the World Class arrangement Programme, Okoye is in receipt of Lottery funding so therefore we will ensure we are in dialogue over any decisions taken relating to a potential switch to NFL.

At 6ft 6ins and 21st, Okoye is a man who NFL scouts believes could make a suspicious end. I won’t be legitimately signing anything or becoming a pro footballer until the end of April, but I have no reason to consider that it’s not going to happen, said Okoye.

If Okoye does sign up he will have to miss this summer’s athletics season, including the World Championships in Moscow in August. He gave up a talented rugby career to switch to athletics and the discus and careful going back to that sport after admitting he flopped at the London Olympics in which he was tipped to get a medal. There is also a place at Oxford University on offer to study law for mutli-talented Okoye. His target at the instant is to return to the discus after a career in the NFL.

Eriksson, who is long-lasting the tough regime as laid down by Van Commenee, had Okoye down as a medalist for the 2016 Olympic Games. He only took up discus in 2010, but Okoye said on Twitter yesterday:Just wanted to verify that I have decided that I want to play American Football in the NFL. Okoye, a European under-23 gold medalist, broke off from warm-weather discus training to go to the trial in Atlanta.

Former captain Arjuna Ranatunga on Wednesday slammed the conclusion of the Sri Lanka Cricket and government to permit players to participate in the IPL as a support of human rights abuse allegations against Sri Lanka.

“What most people seem to disregard is that both Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi want to stop Sri Lankans playing in Tamil Nadu because they accuse Sri Lanka of human rights violations. So playing in other Indian states while skipping Tamil Nadu is an support of human rights allegations against our country,” Arjuna told.

“Players must be made aware of this as the world will say that Sri Lankan IPL players have without knowing endorsed the human rights violation charges,” he said. Arjuna exciting both the Tamil Nadu leaders of playing politics with sport.

“They were never worried about the welfare of north and east Sri Lankan Tamils other than at times of elections in Tamil Nadu,” Arjuna said. He was also serious of the attitude of IPL organizers towards the issue. “They are willing to play in South India without the Sri Lankan players. This is nothing but action destroying the Sri Lankan player individuality,” Arjuna said.

Arjuna’s comments came as the management on Wednesday allowed the 13 players to appear for IPL franchises subject to skipping matches in Chennai. Arjuna had slammed IPL Governing Council’s choice to withdraw Sri Lankan cricketers from Chennai matches of the contest and had asked the players to opt out of the entire high-profile event beginning April 3.

“The excuse that the South Indian politician gave was war crimes. And I am sure the players should take that into deliberation and think of the country and pull out from the entire Indian Premier League,” he told.

Arjuna said that the IPL Governing Council should have taken all the matches away from Chennai.”I think what IPL should have done was pulled out all the matches from South India if they are so keen on Sri Lankan players contribution. But it’s all following gimmick,” he said.

Yesterday, bowing to strong political pressure, the IPL Governing Council withdraw top Sri Lankan players from the Chennai matches of the high-profile IPL after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa refused to host them in view of the current anti-Sinhalese sentiments in the state.

Olly Ranby parched around the Tauranga Domain track on Saturday to smash Joseph Millar’s Waikato Bay of Plenty senior boys’ record for the 200m. Ranby, in his final year at Tauranga Boys’ College, ran 21.92s in still wind conditions to break Millar’s time of 22.01 set in 2010, and beat his own preceding best time of 22.04.

The race was theoretical to be a heat but ended up as a directly final, which Ranby says helped him feel so relaxed when the preliminary gun fired. “I really was thrilled with that run,” said Ranby. “Your training comes into it, of course, but I just got into the blocks and didn’t think about it too much.

“I obviously felt strong round the bend and then coming home it felt as good, as it usually does.”I was really quite astonished at the time as I didn’t think it [the time] would be that quick but in the end I was so thrilled to finally get under that 22 [seconds].”

Ranby is very aware of the implication of who Millar is, with the former Aquinas College athlete making headlines this month by running a wind-assisted 100m in 10.21s “Joseph is definitely someone I would like to imitate in the future. He is 20 now and running quite a lot faster so there is a long way to go yet.”

Ranby also came third in the 100m final at the Waikato Bay of Plenty senior secondary schools meeting, in a time of 11.7s. He was dissatisfied not to take out the sprint double. “It is always good to win, as it is always good for the optimistic vibes, but it was a good race and I put up a good fight. I can’t protest, really.”

Amazingly, Ranby does not rate the 100m or 200m as his favoured distance. He is regarded by many highly regarded people in athletics as an ideal 400m runner and Ranby agrees. “I have to say 400 is my best distance and I have come down from there. But the satisfaction in the training is not there so when I train and I run fast I just enjoy it, especially over the 100 and 200.

“When I get older I might move up to the higher distances.” The rugby season is also threatening quickly for Ranby and he has set himself a lofty goal for the season. “I would like to make the Tauranga Boys’ First XV. I am confident of making the team and making use of my speed.”

Bernard Hopkins became the oldest fighter to win a major title on Saturday night, scoring a 12-round common choice over Tavoris Cloud to maintain the IBF light heavyweight contest.

The 48-year-old Hopkins broke the record he set by beating Jean Pascal for the WBC light heavyweight title on May 21, 2011. Hopkins enhanced to 53-6-2 in the main event of an eight-fight card at the Barclays Center. It was his 29th title bout. The 30-year-old Cloud fell to 19-1.

With Hopkins forcing a patient, technical match, Cloud was unable to press the issue and Hopkins circled him, landing jabs to his face, finally opening a cut above his left eye. Hopkins associated on 169 of 417 punches. Cloud landed 139 of 650.

Hopkins said afterwards, I might go till 50,then said he was only kidding.I’m here to stay but I won’t be in the ring at 50 years old, he said. I just think there’s a time for me to prove I’m different.

Hopkins (53-6-2, 38 KOs), whose nickname is The Executioner, executed this fight to excellence. He never let Cloud get his feet set, and used his ring skills and amazing boxing acumen to keep Cloud at a distance, often off-balance and unable to do what he does best, which is come forward throwing a lot of punches.

Hopkins outlanded Cloud 169-139 in overall punches, and landed 110 of 227 power punches, an amazing 48%, according to CompuCom information.I stuck to the plan. Just took a little time to get warmed up,Hopkins said. I was trying to throw four or five punches that I normally don’t throw and it seemed to throw him off.

Cloud suffered a bad cut over his left eye early in the fight – it was ruled by referee Earl Brown to be from an accidental head butt, but an HBO replay showed it was from a punch. Hopkins zeroed in on the cut throughout the 12-round affair with rightness punching. By the end of the fight, Cloud was cut over both eyes.
